          We are republishing it as part of our coverage of the anniversary of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis.

          The question of what happened to the Japanese submarine that sunk the USS Indianapolis was answered Friday when the Japan News reported it had been found on the ocean floor near Nagasaki.

          The sub had been scuttled along with two dozen others immediately following the Japanese surrender that marked the end of World War II.

          The vessel's commander, however, had a far more interesting second act.

          Mochitsura Hashimoto retired from the military and became a Shinto priest in Kyoto, Japan.

          On Dec. 7, 1990, he reconciled with a group of USS Indianapolis survivors in a meeting at Pearl Harbor on the 49th anniversary of the attack there.
